Characteristics and Functions of Sponge Sanding Blocks

The abrasive types, backing tape, binders, and technology of abrasive paper, one of abrasive material are constantly improving. Some abrasive technologies such as water abrasive paper, dry abrasive paper, sponge sanding block, etc., have the advantages of high production efficiency, good appearance quality of the processed parts, and low production cost. Therefore, they have been widely used in furniture production. The quality of final products of household products has an inseparable relationship with abrasive technology.

1. What is the sponge sanding block used for?

The sponge sanding block is the main tool of abrasive technology. A sponge sanding block is a belt-shaped tool that is bonded to flexible materials such as paper and cloth with abrasive materials for grinding and polishing. The paper backing tape is relatively hard and can produce a high-gloss surface. The paper backing tape sponge sanding block is used in both fine grinding and ultra-fine grinding.

The cloth backing tape has higher strength than the paper backing tape, is less sensitive to temperature and humidity than the paper backing tape, and will not lose its stability due to increased temperature and humidity. As a result, cloth sponge sanding blocks are much more durable than paper sponge sanding blocks. The commonly used abrasives in furniture production are alumina, silicon carbide, zirconia aluminum, garnet, glass sand, and hand-made abrasive paper. These abrasives have their own characteristics.

2. The characteristics of sponge sanding block

Generally speaking, the sponge sanding block of abrasive material can carry out coarse grinding, with large plasticity and large grinding area. Large grain size is used to avoid the insertion of scraps and for soft workpiece; small grain size is used for fine grinding and hard workpiece.

The abrasive is bonded to the backing tape by a binder. The binder should have enough strength, elasticity, heat resistance, water resistance, etc. At present, the commonly used binders are animal glue and synthetic resin.

Animal glue is not water resistant, but synthetic resin has good water resistance. The water-resistant sponge sanding block uses water-resistant synthetic resin as the primer and compound, with strict waterproof treatment. According to the functions of the backing tape, abrasive and binder, combined with the processing object and the technical requirements of the process, selecting the appropriate backing tape, abrasive grains and binder can meet the requirements of sanding processing.
